House Impeaches Mayorkas
NEWS. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas was impeached by House Republicans in a historic and largely symbolic vote that is unlikely to result in any change at DHS.
MAYORKAS. No debate was allowed on Tuesday evening before the House took up two impeachment resolutions by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
REDO. A motion to reconsider last week’s impeachment resolution against Mayorkas passed before a second vote to actually adopt the resolution effectively impeached Mayorkas, 214-213.
HISTORIC. Mayorkas is the first cabinet secretary impeached since War Secretary William Belknap who, moments before he was impeached for corruption and bribery in 1876, ran to the White House, submitted his resignation to President Ulysses S. Grant, before bursting into tears. But the House impeached him anyway. Womp womp.
RESOLUTE. Nearly 148 years after Belknap’s disgrace, Mayorkas didn’t cry about his impeachment, nor did he resign, to President Joe Biden. In fact, at a Super Bowl press conference over the weekend, the Homeland Security Secretary specifically said he would not resign.
CLUELESS. After Tuesday night’s impeachment vote, we asked Marjorie Taylor Greene who she thinks should replace Mayorkas if he eventually does resign or gets ousted. “Well we just impeached him tonight,” she said, “so I’m not sure who they’re planning to replace him with.”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has no idea who might replace Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas if ousted. #news #mayorkas #impeachment
SENATE. A House impeachment alone doesn’t remove a cabinet secretary. Like most legislating impeachments, bicameral approval is required, so this one’s heading to the Senate.
DOA. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer made clear he will not take up the impeachment resolution against Mayorkas, a relief to Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC), who said there are more pressing matters.
NOT MUCH. Ellen Gilmer noted what we can all expect from Mayorkas’ impeachment.
Senate is virtually guaranteed to not convict, Mayorkas won’t lose his job and the vote won’t change the border situation.
But it’s the GOP’s most dramatic political broadside against Biden & means Mayorkas, a very proud public official, will forever have an asterisk by his name https://t.co/A8ByzY1F0x
