On Tuesday, Mexico said they would accept no repatriations from Texas after a controversial Supreme Court decision over SB4, a law allowing police in the state to be deputized as immigration officials. “Mexico will not accept, under any circumstances, repatriations by the State of Texas,” said the statement from the foreign affairs secretary.
Capitol Press asked Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) on Wednesday to react to the foreign secretary’s statement. Both pivoted to Trumpists fictions spoken with MAGA bravado.
COACH. “What did Trump do? He talked tariffs, He talked to things that would take money out of their pockets, and that's all they're worried about, money. They could care less about their border between us and them. I mean, we're the one that people want. And so we were having a lot of problems with Mexico. Those can only be rectified if we get President Trump in there. With this administration, we're just giving the country away.”
CRUZ: “The Mexican government cooperated extensively with the United States when Donald Trump was president because you actually had a president who was standing up and fighting for US sovereignty. Ever since Joe Biden's been president, he has demonstrated weakness to our adversaries across the globe and it has resulted in Mexico turning consistently away from America and exacerbating the problem the illegal immigration. Mexico's behavior is a direct result of Joe Biden’s weakness.”
Latino Context for SB4
Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) instituted a policy similar to SB4 as sheriff in Ft. Bend County. His department was stopping and searching Latinos in the county so much that the Houston Chronicle said it was statistically impossible unless race was a driving factor. What happened under Sheriff Nehls gives us a peek into how SB4 will impact the Latino community which makes up 40% of the state’s population.
“While we do not target ethnicity it is only logical that if you are performing drug interdiction duties looking for legitimate indicators of potential drug traffickers you would expect that the resultant ethnicity would correlate with whatever ethnicity the drug organizations are using to do this trafficking,” Chief Deputy David Marcaurele told the Houston Chronicle in 2020.
